Mobile : Ready? Set? Go!

According to this survey (Source : Belgian Federal Government), some 82% of the Belgian households owns a computer and uses an internet connection. An overwhelming majority (97%) uses broadband facilities.
One third of these individuals has storage space on the internet or chose for cloud computing services for his or her own purposes.
67% of the Belgian population shares his or her life on the typical social networks.

That’s a lot, isn’t it ?

Meanwhile, mobile took a gigantic leap and chew a big part of the online pie. At this time, smartphones reach about 30% traffic share and the usage of desktops drops about 50%.
Finally, only 13% of all individuals between 16 and 74 never used the internet. Compared to 2013, that’s some 2,5 percentage points less.
We’re not the best of class in the European landscape, but the least these data show are the continuous rise of digital in our day-to-day lives. No surprises there, right?

Eat, sleep, mobile, repeat.
It’s a lot of numbers, but you only have to remember 2 things :

• Almost everybody is on the web
• There’s a phenomenal rise of mobile devices usage (including tablets), especially during non-office hours

Design should be user friendly.
Websites that haven’t been adapted to this trend have a big disadvantage : people hardly look at them after they landed on its first page, resulting in higher bounce rates.

The difference is mostly in the UX : a different structure of the menu (the notorious ‘hamburger’), mobile-optimised images (less kB), bigger buttons (Do you also hate those tiny spots you have to land your index finger on?), responsive fonts, …

The best thing to do to evaluate the mobile friendliness of your website is asking yourself 2 questions :

• Do my visitors see what you want them to see on the first sight?
• Is my mobile website responsive?
